JOSEPH A. KEEFE
Author/Executive Producer/Brilliant Comedy Writer/Semi-Retired Comic Actor/Improv Guru
A Biographical Odyssey
As befits his manic personality, Joe is many things to many people (he and his Doctor are working on it).
His motto says it best "I think too much, therefore I am too much." Of course, that may be putting Descartes before the horse. Joe is Founder and Guy In Charge of Humor Resources ... the premier supplier of humor and comedy applications to the business world. With all the humility he can muster (painfully little), he is the foremost authority on humor and improv applications for business.
Mr. Keefe has several books in publication:
Being Irish (Andrews McMeel Publishing) is perhaps the most important book in the History of Mankind - if you're Irish or know someone who drinks beer.
ImprovYourself ... Business Spontaneity at the Speed of Thought (John Wiley & Sons Publishing) is the definitive text for improvisation applications for business and humans: innovation management, teambuilding, personal creativity development and more.
In past, Joe was Executive Producer and Founder of Second City Communications - a subsidiary of the world-renowned Second City Theaters. Under Joe's leadership, SCC became its own business success story, producing more than 3000 live events (no dead ones) and 750 improv seminars for clients all across the globe.
Joe's overwhelming amount of business experience makes him one of the foremost experts on uses of humor in the workplace and creativity processes for the business world. Among several other major topics, Joe preaches "Building a Corporate Sense of Humor." While this may seem to be a lighthearted subject, Joe is passionately and comically serious about it.
In his seminars, he concentrates on bottom-line, profit-generating applications: innovation, responsiveness, open communications and many more components. It is Joe's contention that ... as the business world becomes less predictable and more chaotic ... a functional corporate and personal sense of humor will become critical for managing communications, attracting and cultivating inventive talent, reaching new markets and more. Joe's seminars have helped a few small companies including ABN AMRO, Kraft, IBM and many others.
In other incarnations, Joe was creator and ExecProducer for The Sports Bar, a hilarious and short-lived nationally syndicated TV series. He has also produced pilots for Fox, Showtime and won an Emmy for a series of comedy commercials developed for SportsChannel. His theatrical direction credits include an eclectic array of productions: Pal Joey, Dial M for Murder, Damn Yankees, Girl Crazy as well as many productions for The Second City. He has written for such diverse publications as National Lampoon, Training Magazine, and Meetings and Conventions Magazine.
Joe was born, bred and buttered in Chicago, then spent his "wonder years" in Wilmette, IL. He is a proud graduate of New Trier East High School and a frequent attendee of both Oakton Community College and Columbia College. Joe was also kicked out of Graduate School at the Art Institute of Chicago (something about being a constant wiseass.) He cavorts with his beautiful dancer/wife, Karen, and two fabulous sons, Andrew and John somewhere north of Chicago. Joe has finally reached his lifelong ambition of living the exact life of Rob Petrie.
